Songs of Love with Sandy Bigara and Haylea Hounsom

Songs of Love debuted last night and I was so happy with the show… For a first performance it was without stresses and fanfare, an informal and relaxed evening with a great audience!

I had such fun on stage, told a few rather embarrassing stories (the audience laughed thank GOD!) and sang my heart out, Haylea was amazeballs as usual and gave me goosebumps in my goosebumps.

It's a family saying. Don't judge me!

IF you are in Durban and have R75 burning a hole in your pocket = please come along to the show.

I was also very proud of my little girl Savanna (5yrs) she performed a song for us and even wore one of her dress designs - I was a proud mama.

Sandy Bigara will be singing and performing Piano (Grand Piano via Electronic Keyboard) and Haylea will be singing and performing some songs on Guitar as well. All live, no backing tracks. Simple and pleasurable listening!

The show is separated by an interval, when on the 14th Johannes Wessels of Glenview Guest House and Karen Coyne of Vrede & Lust will present wines appropriate for Valentine’s Day, the award winning Jess, the Red Lady Malbec and the Mochalate will be available for tasting, together with the popular Sarah. The wine tasting is on the house, compliments of Vrede & Lust and the Glenview-Durban North Fever Wine Club. They are trying to secure wine donation for the full run.

The music for the evening covers a variety of styles and all are performed artistically, with beautiful harmonies. Sandy has a 20+ year performance record including tours across Europe as assistant conductor of the KZN youth choir and Haylea studied a BA: Music and Drama Performance, graduating Cum Laude.

Come and hear: Something Stupid, Arms Of The Angel, Bewitched Bothered And Bewildered, Against All Odds, A Thousand Years (Twilight), The Rose, I've Had The Time Of My Life, My Endless Love, That's Amore!, Paradise Road, Rolling In The Deep, When You Tell Me That You Love Me, From This Moment, Someone Like You (Adele), Power Of Love, Hero, Because You Loved Me and more!

Sandy Bigara likes to chat with her audiences in between numbers, keeping them giggling and telling funny stories about life and love. Haylea is a darling on stage and never misses a beat! Together they are set to create a warm and relaxing environment on stage. They have secured some lovely prizes as well, which they will give away "Oprah Winfrey" style throughout the evening. Unfortunately Sandy won't be able to realise her life-long dream of yelling "You're ALL getting CARS!" But they’re sure that the prizes they do have will delight the winners! They will have a CUPIDS ARROW that they will use to decide who win's the prizes...

Oscar Pistorius - Statement from Pistorius Family

Here is the full text of the statement from the Pistorius family:

Firstly, and most importantly, all our thoughts today must be with the family and friends of Reeva Steenkamp.

Oscar Pistorius has appeared in court here in Pretoria this morning formally charged with the murder of Reeva Steenkamp. The alleged murder is disputed in the strongest terms.

These are now live and active legal proceedings which must be allowed to take their course through the process of proper investigation by the police, evidence-gathering and through the local South African judicial system.

In a short hearing lawyers representing the athlete asked for a postponement for a bail application until Tuesday next week to allow time for their own investigation into the circumstances of the tragedy, which was agreed by the Magistrate, who also agreed that Pistorius would be held in custody at a local police station.

Oscar Pistorius has made history as an Olympic and Paralympic sportsman and has been an inspiration to others the world over.

He has made it very clear that he would like to send his deepest sympathies to the family of Reeva. He would also like to express his thanks through us today for all the messages of support he has received - but as stated our thoughts and prayers today should be for Reeva and her family - regardless of the circumstances of this terrible, terrible tragedy.

We will endeavour to issue other statements as matters develop but in these circumstances I am sure you appreciate it is very difficult to answer any more specific questions. Thank you very much for your attention.

Super Storm Approaching New York to Boston and Beyond

"Heavy snow started to fall across the Northeast today at the start of what could be an historic blizzard, as residents scurried to stock up on food and water and road crews readied salt and sand."

Thousands of schools have closed, already more than 3,700 flights have been cancelled and residents are being warned not to leave their homes as winter storm Nemo threatens to dump a staggering three feet of snow along the coast this weekend.

With memories of Hurricane Sandy still raw, homes now face a storm meteorologists have described as a potential 'monster' which could be the biggest blizzard some cities have seen in a century.

As well as heavy snow accumulation from New York to Boston and beyond, hurricane-force winds are expected in coastal areas - battering the same regions worst affected by Sandy in October.

Tsunami Warning after Magnitude 8 Earthquake Pacific Islands and New Zealand

My thoughts and prayers are with the Pacific Islands and New Zealand after a Major earthquake - magnitude 8.

The following article was posted to facebook by my friend Dee Wade, the original article can be found at: http://tvnz.co.nz/national-news/tsunami-watch-nz-after-magnitude-8-quake-5335320

-----------------------
Published: 2:43PM Wednesday February 06, 2013
Source: ONE News

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has cancelled its tsunami watch and warning for all Pacific Islands and New Zealand after a magnitude 8 earthquake struck off the coast of the Solomon Islands.

However, the Civil Defence in New Zealand says the threat still remains.

The Civil Defence said today that only messages issued by the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management (MCDEM) represent the official warning status for New Zealand, not those issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC).

The large quake, which was originally believed to measure 6.3 magnitude, was located 340km east of Kira Kira in the Solomon Islands, the US Geological Survey reports.

The quake struck at a very shallow depth of only 5km.

The Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management has issued a national advisory for tsunami potential marine and beach threat for Gisborne, Bay of Plenty, Auckland, North Cape, Waikato, Taranaki, Manawatu/Wanganui, Kapiti, Marlborough, Nelson/Tasman, West Coast, Milford, Dunedin and Chatham Islands.

People in coastal areas are being advised to stay off beaches, stay out of the waters and to not go sightseeing.

It said historical comparisons suggest that the amplitudes are likely to be greatest in the central west coast of New Zealand, between Hokitika and New Plymouth, and also in the far north of the North Island (Ahuriri Peninsula).

It said the first wave may arrive in New Zealand between 6pm and 7pm tonight. Initial estimates based on preliminary modelling suggested wave height levels between 0.2 to 1.0 metre high.

Historical experience and modelling experience suggest that the largest waves will be several hours after the first arrivals.  The first arrivals are likely to be small.

In many locations the primary concern is likely to come from strong currents within harbours and surges in river mouths.

The tsunami potential threat will remain in effect until a cancellation message is issued by MCDEM.

This advisory had been issued to all local civil defence authorities, emergency services, other agencies and media.

The National Crisis Management Centre has been activated.

The New Zealand High Commission in Honiara said earlier today that it was evacuating and "relocating its consular staff".

Destructive tsunami

Villages in the Solomon Islands have been destroyed by a tsunami generated by a massive earthquake, ONE News has been told.

Director of Nursing Augustine Bilve at Lata Hospital said he had received information that three villages close to Lata had been hit.

An early report said the tsunami measured 0.9 metres (3ft) after an 8.0 quake at a very shallow depth of only 5km, struck 340km east of Kira Kira in the Solomons.

The US Tsunami Warning Center has since cancelled the tsunami warning for Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, New Caledonia, Kosrae, Fiji, Kiribati, Wallis and Futuna.

The tsunami watch issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center was also cancelled for Marshall Islands, Howland and Baker,Pohnpei, Tokelau, Samoa, Kermadec Islands, American Samoa,Tonga, New Zealand, Australia, Niue, Cook Islands, Indonesia, Wake Island, Chuuk, Jarvis Island, Guam, Northern Marianas,  Palmyra Island, Yap, Johnston Island Minamitorishima, Belau.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said earlier that it was aware of the tsunami warning in place for much of the Pacific.

"Our Posts are monitoring the situation and the High Commission in the Solomon Islands has issued an advisory to New Zealanders registered with us as being there on safe travel website.

"The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has reported a three foot wave has hit the Solomon Islands and we have received no reports of tsunami damage yet," the Ministry said.

Zackattack Benefit Concert for Shika Budhoo and Dhaveshan Govender

Zackattack Benefit Concert

Legendary muso Steve Fataar has organised a benefit concert for entertainment couple Shika Budhoo & Dhaveshan Govender, whose flat was gutted by fire recently. The event will be held on Sunday 10 February at Zacks at Wilson's Wharf, Durban Harbour.

In response to the tragic devastation of Dhaveshan Govender's and Shika Budhoo's home by fire recently, Steve Fataar, one of the first of many artists and friends to offer support for the beleaguered couple, will host Sunday's benefit at Zacks. He will head a dedicated line-up of musicians, including Mpume Mthombeni, Sandy Bigara, Reg Stuart, Glenwood Village Music and Quintin Kriel. The roster's stellar talent also includes Jaimie Woolgar, Ashley Raaff and Ron Dove – along with three young guitar prodigies, Aury Livingstone, Rorke Kemp and Cuan Austin, eager to pit their jamming skills against those of Fataar, the evening's iconic host. More artists are likely to be added to the evening's line-up.

"Zackattack has become something of an institution in Durban. It's a monthly jam session known for great music in a wonderful venue with a cash bar and extensive menu, surrounded by water and the buzz of Durban Harbour, under a starlit sky", says Fataar. "It's a great end to the weekend and a kickstart for the week to come, so please join us. Music usually starts around 7pm and continues for a few hours. It's an open venue, with plenty of parking."
"The concept of turning a Zackattack into a benefit arose when a friend, a sound engineer who had helped many local musicians, was hospitalised with cerebral meningitis. Realising the costs, many musos were eager to help raise funds to assist. Several such occasions have since arisen, and true to form, 31 musicians are quick to rally together and help."

For further details, contact Steve Fataar on Facebook, or on 079 988 3724. To book a table call 031-3051677.

For those unable to attend the benefit event on Sunday, a bank account has been set up by friends to assist the couple. Those who wish to assist can email copypuppy@artslink.co.za for banking details.

See you there!

Valentine's Day Dates vs Work

Valentine’s is one of the most stressful times of the year. Singles feel bad about being single, and couples are pressured to go out and spend money on “one night out” – is it all nonsense? Or is it just another opportunity to spend quality time out together?

This year is the second time in my life that I will be performing a gig on Valentines Day. I’ll be performing two gigs in fact – one at Galleria Mall Amanzimtoti inside Butik Asia (my clothing sponsor) and then I’ll be launching my Valentine’s Weekend show called Songs of Love from the 14th to the 17th February and I’ll be performing live piano and vocals 5 times in 4 days… eeghads.

SO for me, this year, I will not be doing the whole “date” thing with my darling Husband. Not sure how I feel about that. I kind of secretly hope that we will still go out on a date a week or so afterwards (if Hubby see’s this then it won’t be so secret anymore now will it…) On the other hand I am THRILLED to be performing with my good friend and fellow musician Haylea Hounsom.

I love a refreshing challenge, and Haylea is such a skilled singer that she forces me to “up my game” and increase my efforts. It’s fantastic. It is also so awesome singing with someone who can hold a melody line alongside harmonies, and ad-lib like a freakin’ amazing diva! I can’t wait to share our music with the audiences that come through to the Theatre.

So, I guess where I’m rambling off to in this post is this: I may not be having the traditional Valentines evening – but I think that I’m going to REALLY enjoy this years Valentine’s Weekend shows.  I just hope that I get over this stupid throat and sinus infection :o( awful timing.

If you’d like to check out who Haylea Hounsom is – please pop over to: www.hayleahounsom.blogspot.com or follow her on twitter @hayleahounsom

Take care all,

Sandy Bigara
